Over the years bandarban has been the most beautiful tourist destination of Bangladesh. Nature has adorned this region with its magnificent and splendid green ornaments. nature is extravagant here. behind the name of bandarban there is an overwhelming story. long time ago this ditrict was a great natural hobitat for monkeys ang it was crisscrossed by numerous canals. Monkeys used to collect fruits from forests on the other side of the canal ancrossit. after eating and collecting of fruits. they returned in the same way as a group. when they crossed canals it looked like adam from a distance. it caught the sight of local marma community and they termend it as magci. here Mag means monkeys and CI means dam.

Naogaon: Paharpur Buddha Bihar(পাহাড়পুর বৌদ্ধ বিহার)

Paharpur an important archaeological site in Bangladesh, situated in a village named Paharpur (Pahadpur) under the Badalgachhi Upazila of Naogaon district. The village is connected with the nearby Railway station Jamalganj, the district town Naogaon and Jaipurhat town by metalled roads. It is in the midst of alluvial flat plain of northern Bangladesh. In contrast to the monotonous level of the plain, stands the ruins of the lofty (about 24m high from the surrounding level) ancient temple which was covered with jungle, locally called Pahar or hill from which the name Paharpur is derived.

Paharput Buddha Bihar(পাহাড়পুর বৌদ্ধ বিহার) is one of our prides from Bangladesh. According to some scholars, this can be the largest Buddhist Bihara from the world. This is located at the Paharpur union(পাহাড়পুর ইউনিয়ন) of Bodolgachhi Upazila(বদলগাছী উপজেলা) of Naogaon district(নওগাঁ জেলা) from Bangladesh(বাংলাদেশ). This place is also known as Sompur Buddha Bihar(সোমপুর বৌদ্ধ বিহার). People called this as Pahar(পাহাড়) as it looks like a hill(in bengali it means Pahar), from there the place is known as Paharpur(পাহাড়পুর). 

There are several ways to visit this place. We have visited this Paharpur Buddha Bihar(পাহাড়পুর বৌদ্ধ বিহার) after visiting the Hinda-Koshba Shahi Mosjid(হিন্দা-কসবা শাহী মসজিদ). And to minimize the cost, we have used the public transportation(changed several times). So it was cheap, but time consuming. 


This place is accessible both from Naogaon(নওগাঁ জেলা), and Joypurhat district(জয়পুরহাট জেলা). So whatever is easier for you(according to your tour plan) you can take. After visiting the Paharpur Bihar(পাহাড়পুর বিহার), we have reached at the Naogaon district(নওগাঁ জেলা) using a Public bus service. It has dropped us at the Baludanga(বালুডাঙ্গা) bus stand of the town with a cost of 40 Taka per person. It was nearly around a two hours of bus journey. So, if you wish, you can reverse the path to reach this place if want. 

How to go paharpur

Sompur Bihar at Paharpur is about 270 km by road from Dhaka and it will take about 6 hours to reach Paharpur by bus/taxi/private car if no major stoppage is made along the way. If one starts from Dhaka, the route shall be Dhaka - Savar - Chandra - Tangail - Jamuna Bridge - Hatikamrul - Bogra - Joypurhat - Paharpur. The best way to tour the site is to first reach Bogra and visit Mahasthangarh and stay at any suitable Hotel at night and then hire a taxi to got to Paharpur via Joypurhat on the next day. Sompur Bihar is about 68 km from Bogra via Joypurhat and it will take about two hours to reach the site by bus.
